LEARN MORE ABOUT MONTEREY, AND BEYOND THE STEVENSON HOTEL BLOG
Monterey has an enviable list of picturesque places and plenty of activities to indulge in at serene locales. Monterey Bay Coastal Recreational Trail is one of these highlights of the city. The trail is eighteen miles long, and while it offers splendid views of the entire bay, it also serves a practical purpose. You can take the trail to avoid the busy roads. You can enjoy a stroll as you get to other popular attractions the city has to offer.
About Monterey Bay Coastal Recreation Trail
The trail runs from Jewell Avenue or Ocean View Boulevard in Pacific Grove, which marks the southernmost end, to Haro Street or Merritt Street in Castroville, which is the northernmost end. The entire trail runs along the coast. It was a railroad once used by Southern Pacific Railway. You can plan to explore a substantial part of the trail, or you could take the route to get to the Monterey Bay Aquarium, American Tin Cannery or Cannery Row, Museum of Monterey or the iconic Fisherman’s Wharf.
The trail was developed in the mid-eighties after the railroad was abandoned. It is mostly a concrete and asphalt terrain with plenty of grassy areas. Many families plan a picnic on these comfortable stretches. The view of the bay is unobstructed and panoramic. There are plenty of activities on the trail. You can rent a bike, or you can get a surrey for your family. A surrey is a quadricycle with a canopy, and it can accommodate six people. You can also rent kayaks or inline skates. There are many rental stores all along the trail. There are many places to eat as well if you choose not to have a picnic.
In addition to the amazing views and the leisurely ambiance, you can spot sea otters and sea lions. It is refreshing to see them in a natural unconfined setting, much different from what you would find in marine museums. The entire trail is neatly divided into two lanes. Stick to the right lane and look out for bikes or surreys. You can explore as much or as little of the trail for however long or short a span of time you want.
